Southern Cross Wellington Launches a new Soft Tissue Robotic Surgery program with da Vinci X
A new chapter for robotic surgery in Wellington

Robotic surgery has reached an exciting new milestone in Wellington, with Southern Cross Wellington Hospital launching its new soft tissue robotic surgery programme. The introduction of the da Vinci X adds to the existing Hugo RAS system at Southern Cross Wellington Hospital, alongside the two da Vinci Xi systems at Wakefield Hospital. It is particularly encouraging to see the programme launch with two general surgical procedures.
While robotic surgery in New Zealand has so far been used predominantly in urology and gynaecology, internationally there has been rapid growth in colorectal, complex hernia, hepatopancreatobiliary, and upper gastrointestinal surgery. Increasing clinical evidence is demonstrating benefits of robotic-assisted surgery in appropriately selected procedures, including improved short-term recovery and, for some operations, favourable longer-term outcomes. The technology provides surgeons with enhanced visualisation, precision and instrument control, supporting minimally invasive surgery in increasingly complex cases.
We are grateful to the insurance companies that have supported and approved access to this technology for their members, helping make these advances available to patients in Wellington. We hope this is the beginning of wider access—not only for privately insured patients, but also for public patients, and through continued engagement with the major health insurers representing a large proportion of New Zealanders.
Ultimately, this is about more than a robot. It is about building local expertise, developing strong surgical teams and giving more patients access to modern minimally invasive surgery when it can genuinely benefit them.
